Governor Proclaims May as Building Safety Month

MADISON – Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed May 2015, as Building Safety Month throughout Wisconsin. The Alliance for Regulatory Coordination, with support from the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, requested the proclamation to help raise awareness of the importance of building safety and to recognize the countless lives that have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by state and municipal agencies in Wisconsin. Building Safety Month is sponsored each year by the International Code Council. This year’s theme is “Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes”.

In his proclamation, the Governor recognizes the efforts of building safety officials and fire prevention officials, as well as the work of architects, engineers, builders, laborers, and others in the construction industry “…who work year round to ensure the construction of safe buildings…”. Also recognized are “…the dedicated members of the International Code Council who develop and implement the highest-quality codes to protect our citizens in the buildings where we live, learn, work, worship, play, and visit…”.

Wisconsin has traditionally been a national leader in building code implementation, according to Robert DuPont, Founder of the Alliance for Regulatory Coordination. In 1913 Wisconsin became the second state in the country, behind only the State of New York, to implement a state-wide building code for public buildings and places of employment.

The International Code Council is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.

The Alliance for Regulatory Coordination is a consortium of 17 business, professional, trade and advocacy organizations involved in building design, construction and regulatory services in Wisconsin. The Alliance seeks regulatory services provided in the most efficient manner possible to effectively promote the health, safety and welfare of Wisconsin citizens and visitors.

The League of Wisconsin Municipalities is a voluntary, nonprofit, and nonpartisan association of Wisconsin cities and villages working to advance municipal government.
