WISCONSIN DELLS, Feb. 14, 2020 — ABC of Wisconsin members earned honors at the 2019 Projects of Distinction Awards Banquet last night in Wisconsin Dells, including Keller, Inc. for Project of the Year and Friede & Associates for the Built On Merit Award.
The distinct projects were evaluated by 17 judges who put their architectural, engineering, and construction knowledge to work with a tough set of criteria. They award projects, based on safety (bigger than anything else), craftsmanship, execution and coordination; budgeting; scheduling; difficult and unusual challenges; owner satisfaction; and overall distinctiveness.
“The Projects of Distinction provides a great opportunity for merit construction firms to demonstrate breadth of skills and craftsmanship,” not to mention overall commitment to building safely, on time and on budget,” said John Mielke, president of Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin. “The level of professional performance and ability to overcome challenges are amazing.”
The Project of the Year honors went to Keller, Inc., for the Eagleview Dental office in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. Located on a bluff overlooking the Wisconsin River, this 4,200 square-foot dental office takes advantage of the popular eagle nesting habitat in Prairie du Sac. Built on a site thought to be too narrow, it has two stories facing the river and one story facing the street. The slope of the river bank was so severe, it required special foundations and slope stabilization measures. The contractor employed an aggressive winter schedule to avoid construction during eagle nesting, which is prohibited. Another challenge was navigating electrical and data communication lines and replacing the brick facade when the owner decided she did not care for it. The project received the highest average score by judges.
Meanwhile, Friede & Associates was awarded with the Built On Merit Award for using more members on a project than any other contractor submitting projects. Friede & Associated employed 32 contractor and supplier members and utilized the services of 13 associate members providing professional service. This is the eighth straight year Friede & Associates has received the award.
The event recognized 54 projects — mostly general construction — but also in specialty trades from electrical to plumbing to thermal and moisture protection. A list of winning projects is below. More details on each project can be found here.
